In our time in the office, I had the opportunity to work on the graduating resident salary survey, an upcoming member leadership project, grant writing for the foundation, and a couple smaller projects. We also had the opportunity to listen in on committee meeting calls and the opioid webinar series. We were kept in the loop on legislative issues and were able to follow through on those issues during our advocacy day in Madison. The clinical rotations provided a wide range of experiences which I really appreciated. I saw urban and rural, health system and independent practice, clinic and hospitalists, as well as got to explore new parts of the state I hadn’t visited before. We ended by attending the AAFP National Conference which was just incredible. I attended workshops, the student congress, and visited residency programs in the expo hall. This externship was great in allowing me to see how organized medicine works. I also was able to practice physical exam skills and get experience before we start clinicals in school. Ultimately, I learned that family medicine can be anything and everything you want it to be because of the flexibility in practice style. All summer we were surrounded by people passionate about family medicine and the energy was infectious. I was inspired by the physicians I met, as well as family medicine as a specialty. -Janessa Snippen, MCW 2017
