The clinical experiences opened my eyes to the breadth and scope of family practice in rural locations. From seeing my first vaginal delivery to putting the pieces of the puzzle together to diagnose temporal arteritis to experiencing life in the day of a family doctor, my clinical experiences were above and beyond my expectations going in. Experiencing the complete satisfaction from providing continuity of care to all your patients is a very profound experience and the one I wish to continue to feel throughout my career. My experience within the Academy and Foundation office provided the full spectrum of family medicine by tying the clinical side of medicine to the business, political, and advocacy side of medicine. There are so many layers that contribute to medicine including advocating for patients and managing the business of your practice in a way most beneficial to your patients. This side of medicine is largely untouched in our medical education and I feel this externship provided me with the unique opportunity to explore this side of medicine and gave me a great advantage. As I am very interested in practicing in rural family practice in my future, I chose this externship for these very experiences so that I could gain more experience with these measures. As a rural family physician, you need to take on more of these responsibilities to better serve your patients. - Samantha Olesiak, MCW, 2015
